Blurred Lines or Blurred Crimes?

This morning, USA Today reported: “A jury awarded Marvin Gaye’s children nearly $7.4 million after determining singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams copied their father’s music to create “Blurred Lines,” the biggest hit song of 2013.”

In today’s world, it’s becoming more and more difficult to find something original. And the lines are beginning to blur (pun totally intended) between creative inspiration and a rip-off. But where is that line? Up until now, that line has been very much relative in the creative community (with specific exception to certain copywritten material). Historically, there have been many incidences of cases like this, but most didn’t go far. This lawsuit however has set quite the precedent for this type of situation in the music industry. What repercussions will become of this lawsuit for the music industry? Only time will tell.

What do you think of the similarities of these songs?
